In New York and New Jersey, the main youth travel soccer tryout season runs late April through early June, peaking in May, for teams that begin play the following September. Miss it, and your second-best windows are August (roster gaps) and November–January (winter ID sessions at academy programs).
Clubs publish tryout dates and open registration in March and early April. Follow your target clubs' websites and social accounts now — popular clubs fill evaluation slots. Some leagues and academy programs run 'pre-tryout' ID sessions in April, which are low-stakes chances to get on a coach's radar before the official dates.
The vast majority of travel clubs in the region hold their official tryouts in May, most running U9 through U19 sessions across two or three weeks. Expect age groups on different nights and clubs asking players to attend at least two sessions. If you're considering multiple clubs, map the calendar early — overlapping sessions are the most common scheduling problem for families.
Offers go out from late May through June, usually with a one-week decision window and a deposit to hold the spot. July is camp season — including ID camps, which double as extended tryouts for academy and college-pathway programs. If your player didn't land where they hoped in June, a strong ID camp performance in July regularly changes outcomes.
August brings supplemental tryouts as clubs discover roster gaps before the fall season — these are less advertised, so email clubs directly. From November through January, academy and premier programs run winter ID sessions ahead of spring rosters, and futsal or indoor programs keep players visible to coaches. There is no month in which a motivated family has zero options; the openings are just smaller and less publicized outside of May.
